What started as practical tools for professional photographers to edit their pictures, the darkroom has now expanded into universal space. In the beginning there were mere programs that enabled photos to air brush, edit share, crop and resize. Now there are trained editors working in photo labs. They can work on two different programs at a time while editing. There are programs that one can download for free and others are professional systems that have advanced features for hardcore editing dealing with commercial photography. Both the programs can be used for editing. Why sometimes editors use two programs is very clear. Earlier software was not able to support all the features. Now there is no lacking. It has become so niche and specialized that upgraded programs contain every possible feature to help the digital post processing of pictures.

The common programs that can be downloaded for free are Picasa, Picknik, GIMP, and Adobe Photoshop Express. These have very basic editing programs and can be downloaded from the net. Then there is high end software that has more than just the basic features. They contain professional elements for advanced post processing work.  Photoshop is a very familiar name today. It has a low cost version and high end features that support every kind of file format. With the addition of cell phones applications now digital pictures can be edited right after they are shot on cam on iphone software.

But when it comes to serious work there is nothing like the sophisticated programs given by branded software that are licensed. And for mastering photo editing with finesse it is a major inventory.  A few brands stick out because they have been able to develop programs with interesting features to support photo editing. Each brand has its own USP that keeps it in the reckoning in the market.
